My name is Mark Goulet. I have a PhD in organic chemistry and spent over 30 years conducting drug discovery research in the laboratories of a Fortune 500 company. I love research. But, in 2020, I decided to step away from that career so that I could begin another related to my second love, woodworking.
This new beginning involved moving with my wife, Joung, from our family-sized Colonial house just outside of Boston to a comfortably-sized Ranch home in the bucolic town of Harvard, MA. Here, a modest outbuilding with a red metal roof would be expanded to become the Red Top Workshop - a perfect spot for furniture making.
My passion is the furniture of East Asia (Korea, Japan and China). I find the design, materials and craftsmanship associated with traditional furniture pieces from this region to be irresistible, and they inspire everything that I do. Lately, furniture from the Arts & Crafts period has also captured my interest. I am a self-taught woodworker who makes a point of learning something new every day. I hope you will take an interest in my work, follow my progress and perhaps let me make a piece of furniture (a Project) for you one day.
The Blog, Under the Red Top, is also a production that is meaningful to me. In it, I describe the story behind the Projects and other goings on in the Workshop. I hope you will find this interesting.
